Exploring Concept Materials

100_0914We use Concept Materials to guide play simulations with adult learners.

Materials are presented with a concept – an idea or set of ideas that can potentially be explored with these materials.

Play is documented by participants– participants are learning to document in preparation to document children’s play.

Continuous play cycles occur– The COI System is used to create possible plans for future play sessions.

One Play & Planning session – per morning or afternoon workshop, which includes introductory and debriefing discussions.  Two sessions can be incorporated into a full-day workshop.

… … … … … we recommend teacher workshops to incorporate one play & planning session per workshop.

Consider a three-day workshop:  That includes two to three play and planning sessions, plus the opportunity to apply what you learn to a process of planning and setting up provocations for your classrooms to welcome children on their next school day.  This process includes the facilitator/s taking video in your classroom, viewing the video with your staff to interpret the children’s play, to plan, and to set up materials in your program to guide the thinking observed in the children’s play.
