Drawings by Peter
A student in a mixed age program in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
The image to the left is 4 year-old Peter’s representation of himself on a hill near his new home (right) that he drew next to a hill picturing the house he just moved from. “This is me at my new house (to the right) and this is my old house (to the left)”. The frowning face reveals his feelings of loss that are also expressed when he says, “I like my old house best.” This drawing was completed in one sitting.
The picture in the middle was drawn within 2 weeks of the first drawing. He drew this image after a discussion about how well he liked his new house at this time. This drawing was completed in one sitting. Peter refers to it as a “Design” but it is interesting to note that he draws it after asking to see and then observing his previous drawing. The similar structure of the forms suggests that he is assimilating his idea of what his home is and adapting it to suit his changing relationship to his new home.
The last image in the sequence that Peter calls his “Design” is started as soon as he completes the middle drawing. The outlines of the complex shapes were drawn and only a few areas colored in during this first sitting. Peter revisited this piece three times before he decided it was complete.
